Venom

I first considered this movies when I was playing tennis with my friend and she told me about it. I never really knew what it was about other than a man who can turn into some sort of beast. Then my friend told be about how funny it was. This I wasn’t really expecting. She the gist of what it was about. She mentioned the relationship between the parasite and the guy’s relationship was hilarious and I knew this was something I’d enjoy. Here’s an overview:

The movie stars Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) who’s some sort of journalist that exposes people. He lives in a great apartment with his beautiful fiance (Michelle Williams) who’s obviously perfect for him. One day his boss, tells him to interview Carlton Drake (Riz Ahemed) who he realized through his fiance’s classified work papers that the man was using humans as test subjects and killing them. Prier to this we find out that Drake had launched a rocket into space that had found these creatures they called symbiotes. Something went wrong with the ship as it came back down. One of the symbiotes had escaped its confinements and attacked the pilot. The way these aliens work is they have to have a host or a body to latch on to. They can’t survive on earth without a human. They need something with their DNA to match or they will only be destroying the insides of the human. Drake is using poor people to test and find a match to one of the symbiotes. Brock goes to interview him and accuses him of this. He gets fired, his fiance gets fired, and she breaks up with him. Now, six months later, Eddie is practically broke and unemployed. One day, one of the one of Drake’s head doctors (Jenny Slate) comes to him and tells him that he was right. Everything he accused Carlton Drake of was true. She gave him access to the lab. He goes in and sees someone from the streets he knows and tries to let her out. He sets off an alarm, breaks the glass to her confinement, and transfers the parasite on to Eddie. Eddie escapes and makes it home. After a while, he realizes something’s off. He’s always hungry and he’s been hearing something talking to him in his head. He goes to his old girlfriend’s home to find that she had a new boyfriend who’s a doctor. He crashes their date the next day and goes insane. The boyfriend (Reild Scott) puts him through an MRI. Eddie goes berserk and the doctor stops the test. Later that night, Drakes men go over to Eddie’s apartment room and try to take him to the lab. This is where we see the power of venom. He helps Eddie escape and hide. Venom is the parasite who is dwelling inside Eddie. He tells Eddie that the rocket didn’t find the symbiotes, the symbiotes found them. They want to take over planet earth. Venom also tells Brock that if he helps him, he might be able to live after the invasion. This is a detailed movie. Eddie’s ex-fiance’s boyfriend, Gets the results to Eddie’s MRI and he’s concerned. The two weaknesses of a symbiote is they can’t survive in fire or a certain, high, sound frequency. That’s why he freaked out during the MRI. The doctor realizes this and traps venom in a room after he comes out of Eddie. Eddie goes home thinking Venom was killing him because of Venom dwelling inside him. He doesn’t want venom inside him anymore. His ex-fiance realizes that he needs venom in order to stop Drake from launching another rocket to get the rest of the symbiotes. He has been inhabited by the escaped parasite who is the leader and strongest. Drakes men are able to overtake Eddie easily without Venom. They take Eddie to a forest to kill him. Suddenly, Venom comes back, this time inhabiting Brock’s ex-fiance. She kisses Eddie until Venom goes back into him. Venom has come to the conclusion that instead of aiding his superior in bringing the rest of his kind to the earth, he will stop it from happening. He says, and I quote, “On my planet, I am kind of a loser, like you. But here, we could be more… And I am getting to like it here.” Eddie and Venom know they have like no chance of defeating Drake and his symbiote but they decide to try anyway. They start to fight and Drake is clearly stronger. The ex-fiance helps by turning on high frequency noises to draw the symbiotes out. Eventually, Drake Goes into the rocket and is about to blast away when Venom destroys his rocket and they both burn. Eddie survives because he was not in the rocket. We are to assume Venom was killed by the fire. Later Brock is talking with his ex-fiance and tells her he didn’t want his old job back after it was offered and was a little upset about Venom. Then we heard the voice. Now Eddie Brock is with Venom and no one knows he’s alive.

Now…my opinions:

  1. I love the ex-fiance. Although being a Christian, I’m not a huge fan of living together before marriage, I love the relationship and the fiance is perfect for him. She’s hardworking and fits him well. Usually, when the girlfriend breaks up with the boyfriend when he is the protagonist, I hate her. For whatever reason, she did it, I usually hate her so much, especially when I like the protagonist. She seemed realistic and not overdramatic when she broke up with him. In so many other movies, the girlfriend has an unrealistic breakup and reaction. This lady was straight angry and she played it well.
  2. Venom Eddie’s relationship is hilarious and works for this movie. The nature of the relationship is love-hate. At one end, Eddie is disapproving of some of the things Venom does. Venom likes to eat people and isn’t bothered when things are trashed. On the other end, Eddie kind of just goes along with whatever Venom decides to do. After all, Venom saves his life multiple times. I also love the fact that Venom is rooting for Eddie when it comes to getting back his fiance. I think it is hilariously adorable. All the conversations between the two protagonists are witty, clever, and wildly humorous. I applaud Tom Hardy and the writers for such a well scripted and executed friendship.
  3. The movie did not use the cliche of the new, overprotective, lousy boyfriend the ex-girlfriend now has that’s clearly not right for her. Whenever this is inflicted, is only shows poor judgment on the girlfriend’s part. No, the character Reild Scott plays is one of kindness and trust. He knows all about the relationship Brock’s ex had with him and he is still okay with him being around. He’s the sweetest guy and he truly cares for Eddie. He’s a doctor and just as deserving of the girlfriend’s attention. He seems to be okay with the two hanging out. This seems like a genuine guy and really likes him. It’s not so obvious who the ex-fiance should pick, though we definitely know it’s Eddie.

Those were just a few of my opinions. This movie is rightfully PG-13. There’s some harsh language and plenty of violence. Ther are also a few clips in the movie where the image is disconcertingly disgusting. Other than that, there wasn’t much sexual activity shown and little to no references. This movie is, most definitely, for a teenager. This is a movie I could watch over and over again. I really enjoyed it and I hope whoever’s here, if they be a teenager with parent permission, will check it out.
